List of terms 

Backstory-  the events that lead up to a character being who they are in the game
Campaign- the overall story arc for a group of characters
Canon material- any material that is produced by the gaming company. This can be in the form of the core rulebook, supplements, or online post.
GM- gamemaster. The person who sets up the game (also Dungeon master, Storyteller, etc.This term changes from game to game)
Non-Player Character (NPC)- every other character besides the player characters, usually controlled by the GM.
Player- any person playing in a campaign
Player Character (PC)-a character controlled by a playing in your game. One of the main characters
Round- the length of time it takes for every character involved to act
Scene-  a sequence of events in a given time and place
Session- a single block of time in which play takes place
System- the dice mechanic used by a particular game ex: d6, d10, d20
Turn- a characters chance for action; usually lasting a few seconds in game time
